It must have been near midnight when the deep bu-ku, bu-ku of a forest owl awakened me, and I had no luck getting back to sleep. I started pacing in a square around the cell.

Some hours later I heard a vehicle approaching. The whining pitch of the engine grew louder and louder until I heard its tires turn on the gravel road. It pulled up to the police post and stopped. Its headlights lit up the trees in front of the jail.

“Nandu!” a familiar voice called.

It was my father!

I shouted, jumping up and down, “I am in here!” but the barred window faced the back of the jail and the walls were too thick for anyone to hear my voice.

Then I heard something stirring outside.

A voice whispered, “Psst, Nandu.”

A head appeared in the window, but I could not make out the face. I jumped, grabbed the bars, and pulled myself up to the window ledge.

“Ballam!”

“Do not worry, Nandu. Father Autry and Subba-sahib will get you out of here. Tomorrow some important people will come from Kathmandu.”

“How do you know this, Ballam?”

“Dilly is here. I am standing on his shoulders. He came to the school to find me. He told me what happened.”

“Dilly, is it you?” I could not see down that far.

I recognized his grunt.

“How is Hala Ram? Do you know?”

“He will live. The doctor said Hala Ram lost a lot of blood, but he was very lucky. The knife came close to his heart.”

A jungle owlet shrieked nearby, making us jump in fright.

“Nandu, we have to go back before the night guard returns from his break. Dilly says Father Autry is a very powerful man. He called to the capital to have your case heard. You will be riding Devi Kali again soon. Do not worry.”

And then they were gone.
